Para badminton team end 2023 with three-gold medal haul in Dubai

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — The national para badminton team ended 2023 with three gold medals from the Dubai Fazza International Para Badminton Championship in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which ended yesterday.

Muhammad Fareez Anuar won two gold medals, the first in the men’s SU5 singles event after beating compatriot Cheah Liek Hou 21 – 19, 21 – 19 in the finals, and then teaming up with him to win the men’s SU5 doubles gold medal by beating Taiwanese pair Fang Jeng Yu – Gui Yu Pu 21 – 1, 21 – 10.

Mohd Amin Burhanhddin contributed to the final gold medal by winning the SL4 men’s singles event by beating Suhas Lalinakere, 21 – 13, 21 – 16.

Following his doubles win, para shuttler Cheah said he would begin training for the new season, especially for the World Para Badminton Championship in Pattaya, Thailand in February next year.

“Thanks 2023, and I hope 2024 will give me strength and see me healthy. Please pray for the best for me next year,” the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 gold medallist said in a Facebook post.

Malaysia’s three-gold haul at the Dubai Fazza International Para Badminton Championship — the last championship to collect qualifying points for the 2024 Paris Paralympics for this year — surpasses the previous edition’s haul of two gold, one silver and one bronze.
