Expand grain corn project, Selangor in talks with other states

By Sofia Nasir

GOMBAK, Jan 28 — The Selangor government is in discussions with other states to form a collaboration in cultivating high-quality grain corn.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari expressed his confidence that the move would yield positive results as the grain corn planting project does not involve high costs.

“We are looking into collaboration with other states or companies that have available land as the project has limitations due to land issues.

“We only have 300 acres of land that can be developed for grain corn planting, but it requires thousands of acres,” he told a press conference at the Gombak Parliament Hari: Entrepreneurship and Culture Carnival at Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Melayu Wira Damai, here today.

Amirudin said if the plan to cultivate grain corn with other states is successful, it will reduce the cost of chicken feed by up to 20 per cent, thereby lowering the price of livestock goods.

“I believe we can do it given the formula and examples currently available. The costs are also very reasonable as we do not use machinery for planting or harvesting,” he added.

On January 21, the state government, through the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS), harvested 118 tonnes of its first crop of high-quality grain corn planted from the previous year.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim said that the first harvest involved an area of 16.9 hectares out of the total 121-hectare farm in Kuala Langat Selatan, Kuala Langat.
