Selangor-KL demarcation to be finalised next year

SHAH ALAM, Feb 5 — The resolution of the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur demarcation issue will be finalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) next year.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said following discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa, the delimitation would involve 19 areas.

Amirudin said the MoU is focused on resolving aspects of assessment tax payments and area maintenance by local authorities.

“By 2025, some matters need to be finalised as the Selangor-KL demarcation is quite complicated as it involves premises and construction areas.

“Both parties are still examining the basis of the previous agreements in 1969 and 1971 and the handover of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya to ensure that the sovereignty of each area in Selangor-KL is preserved.

“So far, 19 areas involving localities in Gombak, Hulu Langat and Ampang have been discussed. Two to three areas are still under discussion,” he said at a press conference after a meeting at the Selangor State Secretariat Building, here today.

Amirudin explained that two MoUs had been signed previously with two regional ministers of the previous administration that focused on calculating the size of the border area.

“This third MoU will be more detailed and brought to the State Executive Council meeting before being presented to the Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.

“It involves the division of state borders and has nothing to do with constituencies,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said the process of dividing the area between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to maintain the Sungai Klang water treatment project is also underway.

He said that an agreement would be finalised soon that focuses on governance aspects between Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and other local authorities.

“The agreement is focused on finalising the areas of responsibility involving localities in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor to maintain the Sungai Klang.

“This division is important to ensure that there are no ‘hold loops’ or overlapping areas of land that are neglected or areas that do not have a clear division,” he said.
