Selangor Sultan calls for diverse, professional inclusion in Klang Royal City Council

By Danial Dzulkifly

KLANG, Feb 5 – The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has proposed the councillors of the newly established Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) should include professionals as it can help enhance the city’s governance and development efficiently and effectively.

In the royal address this morning, apart from suggesting the councillors should consist of at least 50 per cent professionals, His Royal Highness also said the council’s composition should mirror Klang’s diverse communities.

This approach would empower them to effectively address the multifaceted challenges and opportunities arising from Klang’s development as a royal city.

“To achieve the goals I have previously outlined, I suggest the council members not only include politicians but also professionals who are experts in their respective fields (and would be) essential for the city’s development.

“If possible, I recommend at least 50 per cent of the council is made up of professionals. Additionally, it should represent the city’s diverse races and population,” said the Selangor Ruler at the declaration ceremony of Klang as a royal city at Wyhndmar Acmar today.

The ceremony, which was also attended by Menter Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, saw the swearing-in of Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan, who served as the MPK president, as Klang’s first mayor.

Sultan Sharafuddin also urged MBDK employees, councillors, and decision-makers to refrain from engaging in any form of corruption and to carry out their duties with integrity.

“In the same breath, I also implore the employees and staff of the Klang Royal City Council, council members, and the mayor to carry out their duties with integrity and dedication.

“You must reject any and all corrupt acts, abstain from abusing power for personal interests or for those of a certain party,” he said.

His Royal Highness further urged councillors to safeguard the state and nation’s racial harmony, acting as agents to strengthen communal relations.

“I also desire the continued unity among Klang’s diverse races. Respect one another by refraining from touching on sensitive issues related to race, lineage, and religion, which could threaten harmony,” he said.

Earlier today, Sultan Sharafuddin officially announced the change of status of the Klang Municipal Council (formerly known as MPK) to the Klang Royal City Council or MBDK, which took effect on November 23, 2023.

This makes Klang the fourth city in Selangor, after Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and Subang Jaya, and the first royal city in the state.
