Fostering critical thinking: State govt to continue advocating debate culture among students

By Selangor Journal Team

SHAH ALAM, March 12 — The Selangor government will carry on supporting the organisation of debate competitions involving higher education students to nurture future generations that are more critical and rational.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said such a platform will help create a society that is better able to provide ideas for the betterment of the country.

He said this after witnessing the 2024 Piala Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor higher education category debate competition on Sunday.

“I am confident that through participation in this competition, participants can be trained to think rationally, proposing sound ideas,” he said in a post on social media site X.

God willing, the state government will continue to support the organisation of this debate competition in the future.

“This is to ensure that we can produce more students who are free to seek knowledge and generate critical thinking to convey ideas and provide feedback.”

The Piala Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor debate competition was held for the first time in 2019 in Universiti Selangor.

In its third edition this year, which carries the theme “The Role of Students in Empowering a Civil Society” (Peranan Mahasiswa Dalam Memperkasa Bangsa Madani), a total of 47 teams from various higher education institutions and 13 pre-university teams participated.

Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia was crowned overall champions for the higher education institutions category, with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia finishing second and third respectively.

For the pre-university category, Universiti Malaya’s foundation programme won first place, followed by UKM and Universiti Utara Malaysia.
