Kuala Kubu Bharu rep dies after battle with cancer

SHAH ALAM, March 21 — Selangor DAP’s Kuala Kubu Bharu state assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong died this morning following a long battle with cancer. She was 58.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari confirmed the news in a statement today.

Lee had represented her constituency since 2013, winning the seat in three consecutive elections.

In 2020, during her second term as assemblyman, she announced that she was diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer, but was later in remission after undergoing treatment and recuperation.

Lee then underwent cancer surgery early last year, before going on to defend the Kuala Kubu Baru seat in the 15th Selangor State Election in August.

Since then, she had only attended the State Legislative Assembly sitting once on September 19, during the swearing-in ceremony.

News of her critical condition later surfaced, and she took medical leave from the state assembly for the November and recently-concluded sittings.

Amirudin, in his statement, described Lee’s passing as a huge loss to many.

“It will be felt most by residents of Kuala Kubu Baru, who have long been represented and assisted by Lee, even before she became an assemblyman,” he said.

Amirudin also represented the Selangor government in extending his condolences to Lee’s family, friends and DAP members who have now lost an experienced figure.

“May they be granted strength to navigate through this challenging time,” he said.

Lee was born on March 16 and celebrated her 58th birthday last week.

She has a bachelor’s degree in resource economics and master’s degree in library and information science from Universiti Malaya.
