SHAH ALAM, March 27 — The Selangor government has filed a police report against an individual who allegedly insulted Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj and the royal institution on social media.

Representing the state government, state executive councillor for housing Borhan Aman Shah said that the report was lodged against N. Ganesparan, 42, who also allegedly insulted Islam by asserting that Prophet Muhammad was a liar and that prayers are unnecessary.

Borhan said the individual also used harsh and embarrassing language against the Selangor Ruler as well as other Malay rulers and the mufti.

“Based on a video received last night, the statements made could provoke public anger and stir sensitivities that may lead to unrest and ethnic divisions.

“That is why the state government and the Menteri Besar (Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari) agreed to file this police report,” he told the press at the Shah Alam district police headquarters today.

Also in attendance was state executive councillor for youth and sports Najwan Halimi, along with non-governmental organisations the Malaysian Islamic Consumer Association and the Selangor and Federal Territories Malay Youth Association.

Borhan added they would request the police to investigate, including seeking Interpol’s cooperation to bring the man, who has resided abroad since 2017, to trial.

“It is our duty to file this report to ensure this matter is not taken lightly. Legal action must be pursued to uphold the dignity of the royal institution and Islam,” he said.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said they have initiated 21 investigation papers against Ganesparan for alleged statements insulting the Sultan of Selangor and Islam.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be in Hamburg, Germany, having last departed on November 2, 2017.

In the over two-minute video, the individual made racially and religiously provocative statements, suggesting that issues concerning religion, race, and royalty only applied to non-Muslims.
