State to adopt Waste Management Act by year-end — Amirudin

By Danial Dzulkifly

KAJANG, March 11 — Selangor is set to adopt the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) by the end of this year, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the state has already agreed to the matter in principle, but that it will be further deliberated in this week’s state executive council meeting.

“We have discussed the (adoption of the Act) and considered the pros and cons. We aim to resolve the matter by the end of this year as we have agreed in principle to the 62 contents under the legislation.

“We will deliberate this at the state executive council level, and I believe we will come to a resolution and send an official letter to the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) by the end of this week,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the 10-year anniversary celebration of SK Bandar Seri Mahkota, here, today.

Yesterday, KPKT Minister Nga Kor Ming said his ministry is in talks with the Selangor and Penang governments to get them to join seven other states in the country in adopting Act 672

Other than them, the three other states that have yet to sign the agreement are Kelantan, Terengganu and Perak.

“I had an audience with the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, who has given his consent to adopting Act 672. We are now awaiting the decision from the state executive council to start discussions with Selangor in detail,” he had said.

The act aims to ensure uniformity in law for the proper control and regulation of matters relating to the management of controlled solid waste and public cleansing.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said further discussions are necessary with state waste operator KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) regarding the implementation of the Act.

“Of course, KDEBWM will have a significant portion in waste management (in the state), including managing waste-to-energy efforts,” he said.

Earlier during the event, Amirudin presented mock cheques amounting to RM50,000 from the state government to the SK Bandar Puteri Mahkota management to help the school build a new hall and repair its rooftops.
