SHAH ALAM, Nov 7 — The bubble tea chains were told to find other alternatives to using plastic cups as it would affect the Selangor government’s efforts in making the state to be plastic-free by 2025.
Selangor Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the booming bubble tea industry in Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Kajang had contributed to the rampant use of plastic containers, which he said would affect the local councils’ task in garbage collection.
“As part of the state government’s efforts to promote the plastic-free campaign, we have identified that a large number of plastic container use was contributed by bubble tea shops.
“We have no plans to stop their businesses, but we will have dialogue sessions with bubble tea sellers to get them to change their business concept,” said Hee in response to a question by Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin in the state legislative assembly here today.
Hee had also reminded the bubble tea businesses to not only think about gaining profit.
On July 13, SelangorKini reported that the Selangor administration would provide bubble tea operators with a timeframe to have the use of plastic containers replaced, as it was one of the contributing factors of excessive plastic waste.
