Fake news related to Covid-19 on social media

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — The following is an update this morning from the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (MCMC) Quick Response Team on countering fake news related to Covid-19 on social media.

1. The National Security Council (NSC) has dismissed the authenticity of a brief note on the outcome of an NSC meeting dated May 27, which contains several purported proposals to Prime Minister on whether the CMCO should be lifted or extended. NSC advised the public against circulating unverified news so as to avoid confusion among the people.

2. The Johor State Health Department has dismissed an allegation that it had issued a directive to the people who went to the AEON Mall Tebrau City supermarket in Johor Bahru on May 23, 24 and 25, to undergo Covid-19 screening as per a social media post that has gone viral. The department stressed that no case of Covid-19 was detected at the supermarket. It explained that the recent closure of the supermarket was due to non-compliance with the stipulated procedures of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations and not because of Covid-19 infection.
