Emulate Kuala Langat farmers’ group to market agro products — Kiandee

KUALA LANGAT, Jan 26 — Area Farmers’ Organisations (PPKs) nationwide have been urged to emulate the Kuala Langat PPK for its capability to market agricultural products without the involvement of third parties.

Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee said farmers under the Kuala Langat PPK would gather their crops at the agricultural produce collection centre (PPHP) in Telok Panglima Garang, from where it is distributed directly to supermarkets and wholesale markets around Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

“Marketing the produce through the PPHP can generate a higher income (for farmers) and should be emulated by other PPKs. This can also reduce the influence of third parties.

“The ministry hopes more PPKs will play an active role in the national food industry and achieve financial stability,” he told reporters after a working visit to the Kuala Langat PPK here today.

Meanwhile, commenting on the price hike of food items, Kiandee said it mostly involved imported food items and vegetables as the prices were subject to the global market price.

“For example, imported corn is used as animal feed. The price is currently on the rise, so it will also affect the poultry and cattle industry.

“However, the price increase is still under control and my ministry along with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) are monitoring the situation,” he said.
