Johor Welfare Dept sends MCO-stranded couple, baby back to Selangor

JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 27 — A couple and their baby, stranded in the state following the second movement control order (MCO 2.0) for two weeks, received help from the Johor Social Welfare Department (JKM) to be sent back to their home in Kuala Selangor.

Muhammad Khairil Karim, 38, said he and his wife Hamida Kadir, 36, and their six-month old baby Mohammad Rizki were stranded at his adopted brother’s house in Kamping Melayu Majidee, here, since the sudden implementation of MCO 2.0, which began on January 13.

“I learnt that the MCO was implemented as soon as I arrived at the Larkin Bus Terminal on January 13, and because of that I could not cross the state and had to temporarily board at my adopted brother’s house.

“The intention was to return to my in-laws’ house in Segamat but we couldn’t cross the district,” Muhammad Khairil, a contract worker, told reporters when met at the homeless food distribution centre at Dataran Tun Sri Lanang here yesterday.

The Johor JKM yesterday learnt of the fate that befell the family while distributing food at the centre together with the Johor Women, Family and Community Development committee chairman, Zaiton Ismail.

Muhamad Khairil said the family’s situation was made worse when he dropped his wallet and lost important documents such as his identity card and driving licence.

“Thankfully, we are happy to be able to return to Kuala Selangor,” he said.

Meanwhile, Johor JKM director Mohamad Hapil said the department will send the family home to Kampung Hujung Permatang, Kuala Selangor early today morning (January 27) in the agency’s official vehicle.

According to him, so far his team has helped eight families in such situations to be sent home, including to Terengganu and Pahang, as they were stranded due to the MCO.
