Forest reserve fire, one Indonesian worker arrested

By Mustakim Ramli

SHAH ALAM, March 5 — An Indonesian worker was arrested for open burning in the Kuala Langat Selatan permanent forest reserve, yesterday afternoon.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Norazam Khamis informed that his team had arrested the man and handed him over to the Sepang police for further action.

Norazam said the worker’s activity was detected after they discover a new fire in compartment 38 that engulfed 2.43 hectares of forest land.

“Besides that, we also detected a similar incident at another location in the Kuala Langat Utara permanent forest reserve which covers 4.05 hectares,” he said when contacted.

Elaborating further, Norazam said they successfully put out 60 per cent of the fires in both areas, including at previous fire sites.

“I expected another week is needed to completely put it out. It is hoped that farmers will not conduct any burning activities for agriculture purposes, to prevent the fire from spreading again,” he said.
