Selangor records 220 extortion cases from January to June

SHAH ALAM, July 22 —  A total 220 extortion cases involving the disseminating of pornographic pictures and nude videos through social media sites were recorded in Selangor in the first six months of this year, involving losses amounting to RM50,000.

Selangor police chief, Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed said of that total, 54 cases involved syndicates that feigned friendships through social media sites to dupe the victims into giving lewd videos or pictures of them before secretly recording the acts.

“A total of 29 cases involved acquaintances such as former husbands or boyfriends, while the rest involved unknown individuals  individuals sending pornographic pictures or videos not belonging to the victims to harass them,” he said in a statement today.

Arjunaidi said the victims comprised men and women, aged between their 20s and 60s.

He said among the applications which are often used by the syndicates are Wechat; Facebook; Whatsapp; Line; and Skype.
