Air Selangor: Non-revenue water nears 28 pct target

By Siti Rohaizah Zainal

SHAH ALAM, Dec 14 — The non-revenue water (NRW) recorded for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya stands at 28.1 per cent as of November, said Pengurusan Air Selangor (Air Selangor).

Its chief executive officer Suhaimi Kamaralzaman said that the NRW could be reduced to the 28 per cent target outlined by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).

“With more aggressive efforts taking place, we are confident in achieving the target by the end of the year.

“Several measures have been taken to reduce the NRW, including replacement of burst and leaking pipes,” he said during the press conference held via Zoom, yesterday.

Air Selangor aims to reduce the NRW rate to 27 per cent next year.

Meanwhile, Suhaimi said for this year, the replacement of old pipes that stretches along 154 kilometres (km) was carried out with a Pipe Burst Index of around 6.73 cases for each 100 km, compared to the international standard of 13 cases.

“Even though the movement control order was enforced, the replacement works still took place and had involved some 60 critical areas,” he added.

Last year, Air Selangor had successfully reduced the NRW rate to 28.6 per cent compared to the 29.2 per cent target by SPAN.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim had previously stated that Selangor aims to reduce its NRW to 25 per cent by 2025, which can be achieved through thorough planning, including the replacement of various components.
