Consider students’ voices in varsity concert rules — MOHE dept

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 — Student representative councils and unions must be involved in drafting guidelines for holding concerts at higher learning institutions (IPT), said the Higher Education Department (HED).

The HED in a statement said directives to all IPT managements under the Higher Education Ministry were sent to ensure the voices and needs of students, as well as the locality and suitability of each IPT, are taken into account before the guidelines are officially adopted.

The HED said these instructions are in line with Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin’s recent announcement that guidelines for holding entertainment events at IPTs must be prepared by the varsities with input from student representatives.

Earlier, there were reports on social media about guidelines for concerts at IPTs, which stated the audience should be segregated by sex and that there should be a dress code prohibiting attire displaying the Illuminati logo or lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender symbols.

The HED said the matter of involving student representatives in the formulation of the guidelines is still at the recommendation stage.
