Higher Education Ministry to repatriate deceased NZ students’ bodies home

LUMUT, March 30 — The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) will provide assistance to bring back the remains of two Malaysian students killed in a road accident in Lake Tekapo, New Zealand, today.

Its minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir said KPT is getting feedback and complete information regarding the students from the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra).

“So far, we do not have complete information regarding the matter.

“The ministry will assist in matters related to the requirements to ensure the process, including bringing back the remains and others, runs smoothly.

“However, we will leave it to the families first as discussions must be held with regarding the funeral arrangements,” he said.

Zambry was speaking to the press today after presenting donations to 70 students, mosques, and suraus in the Manjung district during the Umno Lumut Division’s fast-breaking programme at Maahad Tahfiz Bayt Al Ikhlas.

He expressed his condolences to the families involved, adding that KPT is also obtaining further information on three other Malaysian students injured in the incident.

Earlier, Wisma Putra, via the High Commission of Malaysia in Wellington, confirmed that two Malaysian students died in a road accident at Lake Tekapo at 1.45pm local time.

In a statement, it said the crash involved five Malaysian students, with the surviving three injured flown to the Christchurch Hospital in South Island for treatment.

Meanwhile, when contacted by Bernama, a High Commission spokesman confirmed the identities of the deceased students as Megat Ashman Aqif Megat Irman Jefni and Wan Nur Adlina Alisa, both of the University of Canterbury.

The other three injured are Nur Firas Wafiyyah and Lya Issable Walton, also from the same university, while Muhamad Faris Mohd Fairusham is from the Victoria University of Wellington.
