TAWAU, OCT 4: A helicopter has crashed onto the roof of a hall under construction at Sekolah Kebangsaan Balung, Tawau, on the morning of October 4, killing at least 13 soldiers and injuring four students. Tawau District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Marsus Fadil said the incident occurred at about 9.15 am. All injured were rushed to Tawau Hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Public Relations Division in a press statement said the helicopter made an emergency landing near SMK Balung in Tawau at 9.35 am. The helicopter, carrying 14 passengers, took off at 7.35 am for its regular daily flight excercise. “All crew and passengers of the helicopter are safe,” the statement said. He said RMAF sent rescue teams to the site and guarded the area before moving out the helicopter. “RMAF will establish an investigation team to identify the cause of the incident,” he said. SMK Balung here is closed to allow the police to monitor the incident, where a Nuri helicopter belonging to RMAF crashed onto the school’s Life Skills Centre rooftop in the morning. ACP Fadil Marsus told reporters at the scene that BOMBA and rescue teams from agencies such as the Civil Defence Force and the Tawau Hospital have opened an operations control centre to monitor the situation. He said the State Education Department is also monitoring the situation. “We received reports that several students were traumatised following the incident as it occurred during a learning session,” he said.
