GM Klang’s ‘Support local, shop local’ campaign initiative helps local traders

KLANG, Dec 15 — The ‘Support Local, Shop Local’ campaign launched by the GM Klang Wholesale Centre (GM Klang) on November 23 is considered one of the best initiatives undertaken by the wholesaler to help local traders introduce their products to the community.

Chips and small and medium industrial (SME) goods wholesaler Nur Azni Asyrina Abdul Rahman, 29, said it could directly help local traders market their products to the community, especially when the country is facing the impact of Covid-19.

“Now GM Klang, Malaysia’s largest wholesale centre, is actively conducting the buy local products promotions and campaigns through its official social media while highlighting local products available at the wholesaler centre.

“GM Klang is a big and well-known brand. When they promote a store through their Instagram or Facebook social sites, people will easily know rather than we conduct our own promotion,” she told Bernama when met at GM Klang, here, yesterday.

Clothing and scarf trader, Latifah Jalil, 59, said the buy Malaysian-made goods campaign initiative by the government and GM Klang itself could indirectly revive the business of locals after the long gloomy period when the movement control order (MCO) was implemented in March.

“When there is a large-scale campaign and all parties participate, it prompts people to buy goods made in Malaysia. When people buy our goods, we can also indirectly afford to provide employment opportunities because there is a demand from the community,” he said.

A buyer at GM Klang, Aminudin Ibrahim, 48 said such a campaign could indirectly create healthy competition between sellers because buyers want quality goods at reasonable prices.

“At GM Klang, all goods are available and offered at reasonable prices. Visitors can choose which stores offer quality goods in line with the prices,” he said.

Meanwhile, GM Klang’s Corporate Communications and Public Relations, assistant manager Nur Faezah Mohd Arsad said the ‘Support Local, Shop Local’ campaign by GM Klang was one of its initiatives to encourage the people to spend at the wholesale centre.

She said the campaign, which started on November 23 until December 23, was in line with the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign launched by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry  (KPDNHEP) in July to encourage people to buy local goods.

“It is our goal to emphasise the importance of buying local goods and its positive impact on the socio-economy, besides making GM Klang the singular option that comes to the minds of consumers when thinking of buying local goods,” she said.

Faezah said the public could support the campaign by participating in the contest on GM Klang’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

“The consumers need to upload photos of themselves buying local products at GM Klang, complete the caption on why the ‘Buy Local Goods’ campaign is the best, followed by the hashtag #SupportLocalShopLocal and GM Klang social media account tags.

“Ten selected winners will win cash vouchers amounting to RM7,000 overall to purchase various branded and locally made goods at GM Klang,” she said.

In addition, Faezah said, in line with the government’s announcement to allow cross-state travels, GM Klang would continue efforts to ensure customers were always safe while shopping at the wholesale centre by complying with the standard operating procedures (SOP).

“The use of e-wallets or using delivery services provided by the wholesaler during the conditional movement control order (CMCO) period is among GM Klang’s efforts to continue this campaign while continuing to maintain the SOP that have been set,” she said.
