Army personnel receive RM16 allowance per day, retirees demand pension adjustment

BY: ERMIZI MUHAMAD
WANGSA KERAMAT, SEP 8: Retired Army veterans’ pension and allowance must be adjusted accordingly for the benefit and welfare of this group.
A former Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) Fleet Officer Laksamana Pertama (B) Imran Abd Hamil said there are inequalities in army pension schemes and allowances affecting the group.
It is disappointing that there are army personnel who are receiving allowances as low as RM16 a day for out-of-base duty.
“The Minister responsible is urged to take the necessary initiative to adjust the allowances to at least RM100 per day.
“Is it even worth it for these army personnel who risk their lives, but only receive RM16 a day when they are on duty in dangerous territory 100 to 200 miles off the mainland?” he questioned.
He was speaking at the Majlis Dialog Perajurit, Wangsa Keramat here on September 7. State Executive Council Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was also present.
Prior to this, there were complaints from retirees and military personnel who had to accept low allowances in addition to delays in payment.
The issue was believed to be caused by the mismanagement of the RM288 million fund, which 1MDB allegedly used in order to pay for loan interests incurred by the company, and induced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak
Commenting further on the matter, Imran who is also Lumut Member of Parliament said that this proves the Federal Government’s indifference to the welfare of army retirees.
“Defence Ministry must take effective action on this matter for the benefit and welfare of the army retirees and personnel,” he said.
