No early state election: Selangor mulls legal action against EC

BY: HAFIZAN TAIB
SHAH ALAM, SEP 19:  The State Government is considering taking the Election Commission (EC) to court if the proposed delineation of electoral boundaries does not guarantee voters’ democratic rights.
Dato’ Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said that the EC’s proposal received a lot of feedback and reactions from political parties, and the state leadership is looking into it.
He said that a meeting will be held this evening between state leaders and the team of lawyers to discuss this matter.
“As State Government, we have the right to object. Not only at state level, but local authorities and voters too have the legal right to object.

“If this proposal does not guarantee the people’s democratic rights in this country, we will look into the possibility of taking legal action on this matter,” he said to the media.
He added that the proposed delineation of electoral boundaries will not affect the chances of Pakatan Harapan in retaining power in Selangor, as the decision lies with the citizens.
“We must understand the EC’s role in this repartitioning of electoral boundaries; is it based on the constitution or are they merely following Umno-Barisan Nasional’s instructions.
“We shall look into this and I do not wish to comment further without complete data,” he added saying that PAKATAN’s discussion will also involve related political parties, non-governmental bodies as well as BERSIH 2.0.
Mohamed Azmin also said that there was no need to dissolve the State Government as the citizens have given a strong mandate for five years.
“We cannot discredit the mandate given by the rakyat in the last election,” he said.
