Free water for the needs and benefit of the rakyat

BY: ERMIZI MUHAMAD
SHAH ALAM, DEC 27: “Granting 20 cubic metres of free water to citizens in this state, is not the State Government’s political bribe to solicit votes,” said BBC Chairman Ng Suee Lim.
On the contrary, he said it is more of a requirement, inline with the state’s principles brought about by Pakatan’s administration of Selangor.
“The Umno clan have nothing but an old issue with which to attack the State Government, whom from the very start, has always been taking care of its citizens.
“The claim that free water is a bribe does not make sense as this a basic requirement of all rakyat.
“Unlike BR1M, which is clearly seen as a monetary bribe as financial aid is given to solicit votes,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini.
He was commenting on a pro-Umno portal, which described the free water scheme as the ‘father of all political bribery’ in response to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement that Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M) is a bribe.
The State Government provides 20 cubic metres of free clean water, equivalent to 20,000 litres or 5,680 galons to its citizens every month; for free.
This benefit is for everyone regardless of economic status, race or political affiliation; as long as one stays in Selangor, one is entitled to the free water, every month.
The implementation of such a policy was created as an initiative to ease the burden on the rakyat, especially low-income earners, due to the high cost of living and inflation rates.
