New 15km bicycle lane in Shah Alam

SHAH ALAM, JUL 11: A 15-kilometre (km) bicycle lane is expected to be opened for use next year with a RM2.4 million allocation.
Shah Alam Mayor, Dato’ Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad said, the bicycle lane alongside the highway emulates certain cities abroad such as Amsterdam, Milan and Melbourne.
“This additional lane is different in the sense that it is parallel to the highway.
“MBSA differentiates bicycle lane and highway through colour, which is blue, and pictures from the aspect of safety,” he said in a media session after the lauch of the 2017 Shah Alam Low-Carbon City Townhall session at the Shah Alam Royal Theatre.

Ahmad Zaharin said several main roads in the city centre such as Persiaran Dato’ Menteri, Persiaran Bandaraya and the surrounding area will be affected.
He said, the aim is for city dwellers to use the lane to reduce carbon emission.
At the same time, he said that MBSA is studying to introduce bicycle rentals after the lane is completed, and will focus in student packed areas.
“A company from Taiwan had presented this project to the State Government and as a local authority, we are interested with the project,” he said.
MBSA has already provided bicycle lane facility covering 10 km in across interesting locations in several areas such as Section 3, 4, 5, 9, 14.
Among these locations are Dataran Kemerdekaan, Taman Tasik Shah Alam and Taman Lembah Bukit SUK.
