Constitution: Dengue is federal responsibility, states merely assist

SHAH ALAM, OCT 12: The issues of dengue are the responsibilities of the Federal Government as stated in the Federal Constitution, said Dr Daroyah Alwi.
The Health, Welfare, Women and Family Development Exco said notwithstanding that, the State Government has taken its own initiatives to assist the Federal Government to consistently fight the disease.
She added that the stand has been taken as dengue issues involve public health and Selangor citizens’ lives.
“We are well aware of the items that fall under the Federal Government and several other items which fall under the State’s responsibility, according to the Federal Constitution.
“Among the items which are the responsibilities of the Federal Government are education and health issues,” she said in a statement.

Daroyah said, a total of RM5 million have been specially allocated by the State Government for dengue and aedes prevention and control programmes for 2017.
That, according to her is additional to the budget allocated to the 12 local authorities, which sums the total budget to be around RM20 million a year.
“The State Government has also appointed Local Authorities’ Council Members to be become the Dengue Zone Action Council Chairmen.
“This is to ensure each zone under their respective supervision is protected and eventually free from the disease,” she said.
For the record, the registered number of dengue cases in Selangor has been declining significantly from the 28th epid-week until now.
The lowest number of cases registered throughout 2017 was 527 cases in the 28th epid-week, which ended last September 23.
Meanwhile, in the current 39th epid-week, Selangor registered the lowest number of hotspot throughout 2017 with merely 23 hotspot localities.
