KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has never pressured nor played any role in the mass resignation of state investment arm Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah).
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the resignation of nine Khazanah Board of Directors was entirely their decision.
“This was not discusssed in Cabinet. This is primarily their decision to resign,” he said.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby today, Lim who is also the Bagan MP believes that Khazanah wished to give Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad the opportunity to recalibrate the sovereign wealth fund’s direction.
Lim welcomes the decision made by Khazanah when he said that it was a smart decision from their part.
“I feel that is a smart decision, to give the choice to PM… It is always the PM who will make the final decision. We leave to the wisdom of the PM (to decide on leadership),” he said.
Earlier today, Khazanah in a statement confirmed the resignation of nine Board members, including Managing Director Azman Mokhtar.
They said that it was done to ‘facilitate a smooth and orderly transition under the new government’.
In July, Mahathir had said that Khazanah has strayed from its intended role of holding shares allocated for the Bumiputera.
