Luas: Oil contamination in Sungai Selangor resolved within two hours

SHAH ALAM, March 27 — The three water treatment plants in Selangor that had temporarily closed earlier this morning had resumed operations within two hours after oil pollution was detected in the raw water source.

Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) in a statement today, said the operations of Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant Phase 1, 2 and 3 (LRA SSP1, LRA SSP2 and LRA SSP3) had resumed between 11.40 to 11.55 am.

It said several measures have been taken to ensure such contamination does not repeat.

“Luas, Air Selangor and related agencies are conducting thorough investigations at the affected location and are implementing control and mitigation measures to prevent a repeated incident.

“Conserving the water source is a shared responsibility,” the statement read.

Luas said investigations at the KL-Larut reservoir found a layer of an oil spill near the Johnsonsuise factory in Bestari Jaya, and had immediately activated the code red emergency pollution alert.

“We have acted immediately by pumping 853 million litres of water per day (JLH) from an alternative pool in Bestari Jaya to increase liquidation rate in Sungai Selangor.

“At the same time, the Bestari Jaya water treatment plant barrage gate was temporarily opened to quicken the flow to Sungai Selangor downstream,” the statement read, adding that an oil boom had been installed in the drainage area to control the remaining oil flow from flowing into the Sungai Selangor.

Earlier today, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) had in a statement said the three Sungai Selangor water treatment plants had to stop operations at 9.40 am today.

This was following the detection of oil pollution at the source of raw water in Sungai Selangor at 9.30 am.

No consumers were affected by the temporary closure of the water treatment plants.
