Malaysia under movement restriction order from March 18 to 31

SHAH ALAM, March 16 — Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has declared that Malaysia will be placed under nationwide movement restriction order from March 18 to March 31, 2020, in efforts to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.

In a special public address tonight, Muhyiddin said the control order is made under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and the Police Act 1967.

This movement control order includes:

  • Closure of all public and private services during the two-week period except essential services.
  • Essential services such as water, electricity, telecommunications, transport, fuel, broadcast, finance, banking, health, firefighting, ports, airports, security, defence, retail and food supply would function as usual
  • Malaysians are restricted from travelling overseas
  • Malaysians returning home from abroad are required to undergo Malaysians returning home from abroad required to undergo health screening and a 14-day self-quarantine
  • All foreign tourists and visitors are barred from entering the country
  • Closure of all pre-schools, public and private schools, residential schools, international schools, tahfiz centres and other primary, secondary and pre-U institutions
  • Closure of all public and private institutions of higher learning and skills training institutes
  • Total ban on mass movement and gathering including religious, sports, social and cultural activities
  • Closure of all houses of worship and business premises except supermarkets, wet markets, retail shops and convenience stores selling daily essentials

Muhyiddin had urged fellow Malaysians to remain calm and to not panic as the Federal government strives to contain the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak with the measures implemented.
