KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — The Selangor government has identified over 30 flash flood-prone areas due to continuous heavy rainfall since last week, says the state Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman.
Izham Hashim said the drainage system was unable to cope with the vast amount of water that comes with the intense downpour.
“An average rainfall level of more than 100 mm could cause flash floods,” he told SelangorKini when contacted today.
Izham, however, noted that several flood-prone areas are undergoing flood mitigation works, which has been delayed during the ongoing movement control order (MCO).
“The state government will continue to monitor the situation and take additional measures, especially in preparing retention ponds as a long-term solution,” he added.
Several locations in the state were hit by flash floods yesterday, including areas in the Sungai Tua district such as Kampung Sungai Kertas, Kampung Sungai Tua Tambahan, Kampung Laksamana, Kampung Nakhoda, Kampung Indian Settlement Batu Caves and Kampung Arab in Selayang Baru.
Last night, the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had issued a warning for thunderstorms in several areas throughout the country with heavy rain and strong winds until 2am this morning.
In Selangor, the areas expected to experience bad weather were Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang.
