SHAH ALAM, May 12 — The Covid-19 infection in Selangor can be contained if more people are screened for the virus, especially those who are in areas that are under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO).

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the number of coronavirus cases in the state is expected to spike in the next few days as a mass screening operation had begun in the surrounding areas of the Jalan Othman wet market in Petaling Jaya, yesterday.

“Alhamdulillah, a downward trend was recorded (on Monday), but there may be a rise in cases following the Covid-19 testing activities in the areas around the Jalan Othman wet market.

“It is better to get more people screened in order to contain the pandemic. Keep a social distance and practice healthy habits to avoid catching Covid-19,” he said on Twitter last night.

As of noon yesterday, Selangor recorded three new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total tally to 1,607.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had yesterday said that the Health Ministry would carry out the Covid-19 screening on the residents under the enforced EMCO in Petaling Jaya.

The surrounding areas of Jalan Othman wet market were placed under the two-week EMCO beginning May 10 until 23 after 26 positive Covid-19 cases were detected in the area.

About 2,600 residents and business premises, including foreign workers, will be tested over a five day period until Thursday.

Three screening centres have been set up for the three zones under the EMCO — Zone A will be located at the food court; Zone B at Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Chen Moh; and Zone C next to the bus terminal.
