MB: Selangor leading in e-commerce with sales hit record high

SHAH ALAM, May 19 — The Selangor government’s innovative e-commerce initiatives in helping small and mediums (SMEs) and micro-entrepreneurs during the ongoing movement control order (MCO) have shown remarkable success with high recorded sales.

In a statement today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the Ramadan e-bazaar Platform Selangor (Plats), which was a joint collaboration between e-hailing and delivery service Grab Malaysia and the Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI Inc), saw a total recorded sales of RM1.52 million throughout the Ramadan month.

He said the online initiative had provided opportunities to 133 food operators to run their business at several e-kitchens located across the state.

“The overwhelming performance achieved will drive the state government to continue investing in and empowering the SME ecosystem as they are the backbone of the business industry, the value and wealth creator among all.

“Selangor as the trendsetter had put faith in e-commerce as the antidote to the slow growth of the economy due to impact from the Covid-19 outbreak. We are confident that the digitisation strategy will drive the economy and become the game-changer in the future,” he said in the statement.

Aside from the Plats Ramadan e-bazaar, Amirudin said the state administration’s initiative to introduce 3,542 mirco-entrepreneurs and SMEs on online platforms have cited a total RM101.1 million in sales within two weeks.

He said the Raya e-bazaar campaign, in collaboration with leading e-commerce platform Shopee, had exceeded the initial sales target of RM8 million by 1,250 per cent.

The campaign had successfully put together Hijarah entrepreneurs, PKNS Real Estate Sdn Bhd (PREC), the Selangor Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (Sitec), and the Selangor Agro Market to take part in the programme.
