Sighting of new moon of Syawal on May 22

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — The date to sight the new moon of Syawal to determine Aidilfitri will be on Friday, May 22, the Office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal announced today.

In a statement, it said the Conference of Rulers had consented to the determination of the date for Aidilfitri based on the “rukyah” (sighting of the new moon) and “hisab” (mathematical and astronomical calculation) methods.

“The Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal will announce the date for Aidilfitri over radio and television that night,” it said.

A total of 15 locations have been selected to sight the new moon of Syawal this year in accordance with the current movement control order in force.

They are in Pontian Kecil, Johor; Kompleks Falak Al-Khawarizmi, Kampung Balik Batu, Tanjung Bidara, Melaka; Telok Kemang in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan; Balai Cerap Selangor in Sabak Bernam, Selangor; Pantai Pasir Panjang in Mukim Pengkalan Baru, Manjong, Perak; and Pusat Falak Sheikh Tahir, Pantai Aceh, Penang;

Other observation centres are in Menara Alor Setar in Alor Setar, Kedah; Balai Besar in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu; Menara Bangunan SEDC, Jalan Tengku Putra Semerak, Kota Bharu, Kelantan; Teluk Bandung, Kuching, Sarawak; Balai Cerap Al-Biruni, Tanjung Dumpil, Putatan, Sabah; Bukit Pelindong, Kuantan, Pahang; Level 13, Menara Universiti Malaysia Sabah International Campus, Labuan; KL Tower in Kuala Lumpur; and Kuala Sungai Baru, Simpang Empat, Perlis.
