Malaysia Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards get record breaking entries

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — The number of entries for the Malaysia Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards (TOPECM), slated to be held on December 3, 2020, have increased to a record-breaking 162, surging 27 per cent compared with 128 last year.

Awards organiser, Selangor Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (Sitec), said since it was first held in 2016, TOPECM typically received between 100-125 entries.

“The increase in the number of participants reflects the booming e-commerce sector, especially after the movement control order (MCO) was imposed in March, as well as the recent re-imposition of the conditional MCO (CMCO) in Sabah and Klang Valley.

“This is where the business community has to embrace digitalisation to cope with office closures, restricted movement and supply interruption,” it said in a statement today.

SITEC said among the Malaysian e-merchants, fashion took the top spot as the most popular product category, accounting for 25 per cent of the total products, followed by mobile, electronic and gadgets (20 per cent), health and beauty (15 per cent), home and living (10 per cent), as well as groceries (eight per cent).

“The sudden increase in e-sellers of grocery items, which rose to eight per cent from two per cent last year, is a reflection of how the Covid-19 pandemic has shaped our lives to embrace a low-touch economy,” it said.
