LZS to help 5,000 workers affected by Covid-19

By Khairul Azran Hussin

SHAH ALAM, Nov 24 — The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) will channel a special aid to 5,000 workers affected by Covid-19.

Its chief executive officer Saipolyazan M Yusop said the workers are employees of companies that had contributed zakat (tithe) to the state agency.

“LZS had received 5,000 names and we are now checking their eligibility to receive the assistance.

“If eligible, LZS will disburse to each individual RM500 per month for three to six months and it is hoped that this would help ease the burden of those who faced pay cuts or loss of income,” he said during a press conference at the LZS office in Presint ALAMi, Section 13, here yesterday.

Saipolyazan said the move to help the workers is a recognition of their employers’ commitment to paying zakat every year.

“Before this, we had used the collection from the zakat paid by these companies to help others, so now it is our turn to help (their workers) in return,” he said.

On September 15, Saipolyazan said LZS has allocated RM1 million to assist workers who were affected by the movement control order (MCO).

The state agency had also collaborated with the Social Security Organisation (Socso) for affected workers to get total social security protection.
