Amended Luas Enactment receives royal assent, heftier penalties await polluters

SHAH ALAM, Dec 8 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, has given his consent to the amendments made to the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) Enactment, which includes heftier penalties against polluters.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari in a posting on Facebook today said the enactment will be gazetted immediately to be enforced against the offenders.

The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) Amendment Bill 2020 was passed at the Selangor Legislative Assembly on November 9 after a string of pollution incidents left millions of taps in the state dry.

Meanwhile, Amirudin had lauded the quick action by Luas, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd and state government agencies in identifying the pollution source of an earlier reported river contamination incident.

“Another river pollution case, which was organised to cause unscheduled water disruption to the consumers, was once again averted.

“Even though the water treatment plants (WTP) had temporarily ceased operations, swift action by the state authorities had successfully resolved the pollution incident,” he said in a statement on Facebook today.

“The treatment plants had resume operations in a short time span which gave a positive impact.”

Earlier, Air Selangor had informed that operations at the Rantau Panjang WTP had resumed at 3.30am and 5am at the Sungai Selangor 1, 2, 3 WTPs after recording zero TON (threshold odour number) pollution level three times in a row.

It said the pollution detected in Sungai Selangor had caused the temporary closure of the Rantau Panjang WTP at 11.30pm, followed by the Sungai Selangor Phase 1,2, and 3 WTP at 1am today.

The suspension of the WTP operations would have affected 1,274 areas in Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Hulu Langat and Kuala Lumpur.
