Azuan’s death huge loss to Base jump community

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 3 — The demise of an experienced Base jumper, the late Azuan Taharudin is a great loss to the Base jump community as he had been a source of reference for new Base jumpers and an expert in its technical aspects.

Fellow jumper, Adi Khirman Marji said he had known the deceased since 2012 while skydiving before they ventured into Base jumping in 2014.

“The late Azuan was among the first to venture into the extreme sports event. Most of my Base jump activities were performed with him because he was a ‘sifu’ (master) and a person who was highly skilled at handling parachutes.

“Azuan would study the technical aspects of a new equipment before jumping,” he said when contacted via WhatsApp, here today.

Adi said he and Azuan had also planned various programmes in their effort to raise and highlight the Base jump community in Malaysia.

He was proud to have been in action with Azuan and among their achievements were 2016/17/18/19 KL Tower International Jump, 2019 National Day Jump, 2018 Federal Territories Day Celebration Jump, 2020 Putrajaya Event Base Jump, KPWKM 2019 Family Day Celebration gimmick, 2020 UiTM BUDIRun event gimmick, 2018 Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta Jump Demo and 2019 Putrajaya Jubilee Jump.

The remains of Azuan who was killed when performing a Base jump trial at the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) building here, on Friday, were laid to rest at the Sungai Kantan Muslim cemetery in Kajang, yesterday.

In the incident at 5.35 pm, Azuan, 49, along with seven other Base jumpers from Team Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) were training for a performance in conjunction with the 2021 Federal Territories Day.

Azuan was said to have lost control of his parachute during the jump and fell on the side of the building.

It is learnt that the fatal incident involving Base jumping activities was the first of its kind in Putrajaya.

Previously, such an incident occurred in 2010 at Menara Alor Setar in Kedah, involving a female Base jumper from Australia after her parachute failed to open during a training session.
