State of emergency: Economy to run as usual

SHAH ALAM, Jan 12 — Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says that economic activities will continue to run normally throughout the emergency period from January 11 to August 1.

“Economic activities will continue functioning subject to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the movement control order (MCO).

“The government will ensure that economic activities do not halt so that the people can continue to work and conduct their businesses, trades and industries as usual,” said Muhyiddin in a special address on the declaration of a state of emergency broadcasted live today.

He said that if a serious emergency is causing detriment to the security, or the economic health, or public order in the nation, then the King has the authority to issue an emergency proclamation.

“In this case, the world is currently faced with the direct threat of the Covid-19 pandemic to the economic lives of the people of this nation, (therefore) an emergency declaration can be made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong concerning this matter,” he said, adding assurance that the government already has in place a 6-stage strategy for economic recovery since March.

“To all the stakeholders keenly monitoring what is happening in Malaysia, I emphasise that Malaysia is open for business.

“In facing these challenging times, this period of emergency will give us much needed calm and stability, as well as enable us to focus on economic recovery and regeneration. We remain committed to good governance in these times and we have a robust and dynamic regulatory ecosystem.”

Muhyiddin also warned that harsh actions will be taken against any parties that attempt to disrupt the government’s efforts in managing the pandemic situation and the country’s economy to safeguard the people’s wellbeing and national security.
