SHAH ALAM, Feb 13 — The Selangor 2021 Chinese New Year virtual celebration last night received an overwhelming response when it recorded 123,000 spectators.

State Standing Committee on Non-Islamic Affairs co-chairman Dato’ Teng Chang Khim said the public has viewed the special programme themed ‘New Year, New Hope’ through the Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s Facebook page and online media.

“It is an amazing result. I am proud of the high quality of the cultural performances and the number of live broadcast viewers,” he told SelangorKini.

The inaugural festivities celebration for the Tiong Hua community to be held through the social media platform was done due to the current Covid-19 pandemic situation which disallows holding of mass gathering and public events.

However, Selangor took the approach of producing the programme online, in line with the new norms for the Chinese community to enjoy the festive season from their homes.

The 68-minutes programme showcased 12 performances that include singing, dancing and cultural performances, that cost RM414,000.

Lucky spectators also have the opportunity to win ang pows worth between RM28 (150 ang pows) and RM168 (five ang pows).

The RM168 ang pows draw was held on the 15th, 30th, 45th, 60th minutes and after the live broadcast ended, the list of winners will be announced on 15 February.
