Services producer price index up 0.5 pct in fourth quarter 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 — The services producer price index (SPPI) had increased 0.5 per cent to 110.1 in the fourth quarter of 2020 (Q4 2020) from 109.6 posted in Q4 2019, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the main sub-sectors that contributed to the increase were accommodation and food and beverage service activities (1.5 per cent), real estate activities (1.5 per cent), health (1.3 per cent), transportation (0.9 per cent), and education (0.6 per cent).

However, the index for arts, entertainment and recreation, as well as information and communication decreased by 2.2 per cent and 0.1 per cent, respectively, while the index for professional remained unchanged, he said in a statement today.

Mohd Uzir noted that quarter-on-quarter, the SPPI declined 0.2 per cent in Q4 2020 compared to the previous quarter.

“This was driven by the following sub-sectors — transportation (0.9 per cent), arts, entertainment and recreation (0.9 per cent), real estate activities (0.2 per cent) and education (0.1 per cent).

“Meanwhile, accommodation, as well as food and beverage service activities and health indices increased by 0.3 per cent and 0.1 per cent, respectively, while the professional, information and communication indices remained unchanged,” he added.

Mohd Uzir said following the implementation of the Movement Control Order, the second phase of the Malaysia Population and Housing Census 2020 which is conducted via face-to-face interviews have been rescheduled.

“Therefore, people who have not completed the census can take the opportunity to fill in the online census (e-Census) which will be reopened,” he said.
