State Legislative Assembly sitting on March 22 postponed — Speaker

By Nadiah Zamlus

SHAH ALAM, Feb 19 — The Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting scheduled on March 22 have to be postponed following Covid-19 pandemic and the Emergency rule, said speaker Ng Suee Lim.

However, he could not anticipate when the 14th state assembly sitting will be held again.

“We have to accept that Parliament and the State Legislative Assembly are not allowed to sit, but as a parliamentary democracy nation, if it continues to be suspended, its legislative function will be paralysed.

“Because Parliament and State Legislative Assembly are venues for check and balance to monitor the government and ensure transparency,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini.

Ng, who is also Sekinchan state assemblyman, informed that if the State Legislative Assembly reconvenes, the Covid-19 screening test and standard operating procedures (SOP) will continue to be implemented.

“All individuals involved will still be screened except for those who have been vaccinated.

“As for the SOP, we will maintain it because it effectively reduces the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

Previously, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah allowed the Emergency implementation period until August 1 or until an earlier date if the daily positive Covid-19 case figures can be controlled and lowered effectively.
