LZS aims to collect RM150 mln zakat during Ramadan

By Mustakim Ramli

SHAH ALAM, May 5 — The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) targets to collect RM150 million of zakat or tithe from property, business and fitrah (personal tithe) during Ramadan this year, Berita Harian reported.

Its chief executive officer Saipolyazan M Yusop said from the total amount, RM31 million would be collected from zakat fitrah.

“During Ramadan last year while under the movement control order (MCO), we started strengthening the online system for zakat payment.

“Through the implementation of the system, we collected RM18 million in zakat fitrah last year (from online collection only). From the experience, we hope it will prepare us for the year and achieve the set target,” he said after an iftar and handing over ceremony for business tithe here yesterday.

During the event, Saipolyazan also launched the Zakat Selangor mobile application which allows public access to information on zakat payment.

He said during the trial period last week, the app saw more than 500 downloads before it was officially announced.

“In fact, some have already paid zakat using the app and we managed to collect about RM60,000 before its official launch.

“The app would ease the zakat payment process especially after the MCO is re-enforced in six districts in Selangor from May 6,” he said.

The Zakat Selangor app provides statements, checks, aid status, latest LZS campaign announcements and promotions, information on nisab (minimum amount of wealth that must be owned by a Muslim before he/she is obligated for zakat) and daily gold prices.

Download the app via Google Playstore or Apple App Store.
