Get people in Klang Valley vaccinated sooner to reduce daily cases by half

SHAH ALAM, June 14 — Prioritising Klang Valley residents to receive the Covid-19 vaccination doses would be able to reduce the daily cases by 50 per cent, says the Selangor Task Force Operations (STFO).

Its director Dr Muhammad Farhan Rusli said the people in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur should get inoculated sooner as more than half of the daily new Covid-19 cases are detected across the Klang Valley.

“Getting the vaccine would reduce the risk of being infected and this would then bring down the number of severe cases or those being treated in the intensive care units.

“Therefore, the focus should be on hotspot areas and since the Klang Valley has recorded high number of cases, there should be a priority for those here compared to other states,” he told SelangorKini

Dr Muhammad Farhan added that since Selangor and Kuala Lumpur is the economic centre of the country, the health of the workers in the area should be prioritised to ensure that the sector runs smoothly.

“Selangor is the largest contributor to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP), therefore the workers in the economic sector should receive the vaccine earlier to curb the spread of the infection,” he said.

On Saturday, Universiti Malaya expert virologist Prof Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar was reported to have urged the Federal government to change its strategy in vaccine delivery using an active approach by focusing on areas registering a high number of cases and that are densely populated such as Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

The Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre director said the current passive approach by Putrajaya in executing the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme does not help in curbing the continuous spread of the coronavirus.
