KLANG, July 18 — Some 90 per cent of the elderly group in Selangor have received their Covid-19 vaccine shots as of yesterday, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besar said efforts to expedite the process of vaccinating the group has reduced the number of senior citizens admitted to the hospital by 40 per cent.

“There may be among them that had tested positive but they do not need to be sent to the hospital due to the low risk from being vaccinated.

“Previously, the fatalities involving the elderlies in Selangor were mostly those who were not yet vaccinated and with comorbidities. Therefore we will continue with the efforts to deliver the vaccines to protect the lives of the people,” he said when met after observing the Covid-19 vaccination programme of Taman Desawan resident in Klang Jaya, here, today.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said 1,600 residents in the area are among the first to be a part of an approach initiated by the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS) to vaccinate residential areas that have recorded a high number of Covid-19 cases.

He said the effort is a continuation of the programme in delivering vaccines to residential areas that were enforced under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO).

“Aside from vaccinating those under EMCO, this is another approach by the JKNS and the health district office to protect the people in the state from being infected.

“These two approaches will be carried out based on the suitability of the area to accommodate the vaccination process,” he said.

Amirudin added that the EMCO should have been enforced in Taman Desawan after 100 positive cases were detected in the area within a month before the number of infections dropped.

“Therefore, we have decided to vaccinate the residents who were tested negative after the screening process had completed. Initially, we estimated about 2,000 residents (to be vaccinated) but some of them already received their appointments via MySejahtera, so we only jab those who have not received an appointment,” he said.

Earlier this month, JKNS had implemented the vaccination process for residents at Mentari Court, Petaling Jaya, which was placed under the EMCO.
