KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — The daily Covid-19 cases in the country has exceeded 17,000 for the second consecutive day with 17,170 new cases reported today.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a tweet said with the new cases, the cumulative number of cases has increased to 1,078,646.
Selangor continued to report the highest number of new infections at 7,163 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,138 cases.
“In addition Kedah recorded 1,212 cases; Johor (1,054); Negeri Sembilan (884); Sabah (776); Pahang (638); Kelantan (615); Perak (596); Sarawak (582); Penang (554); Terengganu (437) and Melaka (416), ”he said.
Meanwhile Putrajaya recorded 84 cases followed by Labuan (11) and Perlis (10).
Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham in a media statement announced that the number of patients being treated in intensive care units (ICUs) had exceeded 1,000 with 1,043 cases, out of which 531 require respiratory assistance.
According to him, there were 12,930 recoveries recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 890,742 cases.
In addition he said 174 fatalities were reported today, bringing the death toll so far to 8,725 cases, adding that 157 Malaysians and 17 foreigners died today.
Dr Noor Hisham also said that 36 new clusters were detected yesterday, 18 of them workplace clusters, 14 community clusters, three high-risk group clusters and one detention centre cluster.
He also shared that Malaysia’s Covid-19 infectivity rate or R-naught (Rt) yesterday was 1.16, with Terengganu recording the highest value at 1.33, followed by Kelantan (1.26), and Sabah as well as Penang at 1.25.
All states recorded Rt values of over 1.0 except for Negeri Sembilan, the Federal Territory of Labuan, and Perlis.
Meanwhile, he said of the 17,170 daily cases today, 383 (2.3 per cent) were Category Three, Four and Five, while 16,787 (97.7 per cent) were Category One and Two.
“Some cases remain in the same category throughout the infection period, but there are those that change status, either to a lower category or a higher category,” he added.
