MB: Selangor’s Covid-19 cases soar due to mass screening in EMCO areas

SHAH ALAM, July 8 — The upsurge in daily Covid-19 cases in Selangor is the result of mass screenings being carried out in areas placed under the enhanced movement order control (EMCO), says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besar said the comprehensive testing in EMCO areas had contributed to a cumulative of 1,346 cases as well as close contact screenings of positive cases in EMCO areas.

In a series of tweets this evening, he said the state has offered several suggestions to the National Security Council (NSC), including to maintain the closure of economic and industrial sectors that were previously set until the EMCO is lifted.

“The state government had also proposed expediting the vaccination process of workers and the vaccination rate is determined as one of the factors for the reopening of the economic sector,” he wrote.

Amirudin said the Selangor government views that the purpose of enforcing the EMCO to break the chain of infection and to ease the burden on the national healthcare system has yet to be fulfilled.

“Therefore, the state government suggests that only essential sectors be opened,” he added.

The daily Covid-19 infection had today jumped to a total of 8,868 cases, which is the second-highest record since the 9,020 cases registered on May 29.

Selangor saw a total of 4,152 cases today, which is a steep hike from the 2,000 to 3,000 daily average.

The state had been enforced under the EMCO, which involves 34 subdistricts in eight districts from July 3 to 16.
