Hybrid state assembly to be held next year

SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 — A hybrid Selangor State Legislative Assembly would be possible to be held next year, says speaker Ng Suee Lim.

He said a motion to amend the standing order of the Legislative Assembly of Selangor 1965 to include the clause that will allow the speaker to hold a hybrid meeting, will be tabled during the assembly which will start on Monday for nine days.

“This will allow the speaker to hold a hybrid meeting during uncertain times (such as the current Covid-19 outbreak).

“If the assemblymen agrees with the motion, the committee will plan for the execution and the motion will be tabled for an approval during December sitting,” he said during a press conference at Annex Building, here, today.

He said Selangor is the first state to propose a hybrid State Assembly.

Yesterday, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the motion to allow the hybrid sitting will be tabled during the session.

He said the move is taken in preparation to face another pandemic outbreak in the future which will make it difficult to have the physical session.

The full sitting will be held at the Annex Building beginning August 23 to September 6.

The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj is scheduled to grace the opening ceremony of the State Assembly sitting on August 23.
