Flood mitigation project to be completed in a year — MB

SHAH ALAM, Sept 29 — The development of a long term flood mitigation project (RTB) is expected to be completed within a year, said the Menteri Besar.

Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said certain parts of the project, which aims to overcome the flood issue in the state, is currently ongoing while other parts are affected due to the movement control order (MCO).

“The existing mitigation project is only for a drainage system for a period of 50 years. However it is unable to contain heavy rainfall in certain areas.

“The rapid development has prompted us to change the flood mitigation project by upgrading the drainage system for a period of 100 years instead of 50 years which was decided last year,” he said during a press conference after a donation handover from Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd to the state government, here, today.

Amirudin said the allocation was channeled to the related agencies, but that the execution cannot be done rapidly as it requires a thorough technical report from each department, especially on the width and depth aspect.

“The Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) will be the focal agency to coordinate the work. We are in the midst of completing the project, while some parts of it were affected due to the MCO,” he said.

On November 4 last year, Amirudin said the RTB plan which would last for a century was created as the solution to the issue of flooding in Selangor.

He added the project involves the widening of the Sungai Langat which aims to accommodate water capacity, and to prevent the recurrence of floods.
