Temporary licence for battery factory in Jenjarom yet to be approved

SHAH ALAM, Sept 28 — The Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) has yet to issue a temporary licence to the battery factory in the Jenjarom industrial area, as the operator did not fully comply with the conditions and criteria.

In a statement, MPKL said among the criteria includes not obtaining the building plan approval due to the renovation works from which took place in the factory, as required by the Department of Environment (DOE)

“Should the company, Federal Power Holding Sdn Bhd, fail to meet the conditions, MPKL will revoke its temporary licence and strict action will be taken,” the statement read.

Meanwhile MPKL president Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim said the approval for full licence may be considered if the company manages to comply with all of the conditions set by the DOE and the local council.

“This decision also takes into account a period of two years with a temporary business license issued and renewed every six months, through the approval of MPKL’s Business and Health Control Committee Meeting,” he said.

Amirul said this during the engagement session pertaining to the operation of the company along with the Jenjarom residents community, the DOE, the Kuala langat District Land Office representative, the Kuala Langat District Police chief as well as the resident’s representatives, today.

Previously, the plan to reopen the factory’s operation was objected to by local residents and a non-governmental organisation (NGO) over concerns relating to pollution and safety aspects.

The residents and NGO also have handed over their memorandum of objection to MPKL, following their protest.

Commenting further, Amirul said the DOE and MPKL have assured the state government is continuously monitoring the situation every week, regardless of any complaints reported, to ensure that the company abides to the rigorous rules and conditions imposed on them.

MPKL also referred to the DOE regarding the construction of factories set up in the Jenjarom medium industrial area, as well as the proposed battery installation activities allowed in the medium industrial area,

Thus far it has been found to be in compliance with the conditions and the distance of the buffer zone which is not less than 150 meters.

He said the DOE also has decided upon and set the rules which must be adhered to by Federal Power Holdings.

These include limiting the activities allowed to the installation of rechargeable solar batteries (AGM/VRLA/SLA batteries) with a quantity of 6,800 units per day.

Any lead plate smelting and manufacturing process is not allowed.

“A floor plan renovation also must be carried out according to the approved floor plan,” he said.
