Selangor has its own guidelines to prevent corruption, says MB

SHAH ALAM, Oct 1 — The state government has guidelines on how to ensure individuals in office do not become involved in corruption, said Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said every position and place of power is followed by risks that can have an impact, such as the awarding of contracts and approval of projects.

As such there is a very fine line between what constitutes gift-giving and corruption, particularly on occasions including birthdays, appointments to office, or at times on confusing grounds.

“We must be aware that whatever position of power, there will always be the pressure to use it for personal advantages. It may be called a gift, but can also be regarded as a motivating factor to provide opportunities to certain important individuals.

“That is why at Menteri Besar (Incorporated) we have a policy that mandates any gifts given must have its value declared, which has been the case for a long time. I believe this rule on gifts is being followed and will be able to combat corruption in the name of responsibility,” Amirudin said.

Speaking during the live broadcast of the discussion “Is Selangor A Hub of Corruption?” yesterday night, the Menteri Besar said the state had already introduced certain restrictions on political leadership since 2008.

“It does not only include awarding contracts at the local authorities’ level, any councillors who are also politicians are not allowed to attend such meetings as we do not want them to become too powerful in deciding something.

“Even in land committees no assemblymen or MPs are placed as it would create conflict between the Yang Dipertua, due to the large opportunity in determining everything,” he said.
