SERVE members to undergo future training and skill-boosting in disaster management

SHAH ALAM, Oct 23 — All members of the Selangor Volunteer (SERVE) organisation in the state’s 56 constituencies will undergo disaster management training in the nearest future, said the state exco for community networking and volunteerism Danish Hairudin.

He said such training is important in equipping volunteers with the knowledge and skills when conducting assistance missions, especially for first-time youths.

“SERVE is still a new establishment, so we need to provide exposure and full guidance to them, before going any further in the coming years.

“So, based on our discussions with state exco for youth generation Mohd Khairuddin Othman and the Selangor Youth Movement (PeBS), we agreed to hold tranings for them before the end of December,” Danish said during the ‘Kenali SERVE: Sukarelawan Selangor’ talk programme live-streamed on Media Selangor’s Facebook yesterday.

SERVE members will also be covered with insurance, while carrying out their duties on the field, particularly for assistance missions involving large-scale disasters outside of Selangor.

“For example when we were in Yan, Kedah, we aided the flood victims of the river source disaster. All 50 volunteers who participated were covered by insurance.

“Other NGOs might consider matters pertaining to insurances to be trivial, but it is actually important to volunteers, in the event of untoward incidents,” he said.

SERVE is open to individuals aged 36 and above, and is a complement to PeBS, which limits its members to the ages of 18 to 35.
