Cholera alert as sole patient makes full recovery

SHAH ALAM, Nov 15 — A local woman who contracted cholera in Petaling district last month has fully recovered, says state executive councillor for health.

Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS) has carried out investigations to identify the source of the infection, including conducting tests on food vendors who have sold meals to the patient.

The cause, however, is not yet known.

“The case was detected on October 21. Further investigations found that all (food vendors) are free from the bacteria. Even though we are not able to detect the cause of infection, JKNS will be on the alert should another case occur.

“The food vendors are also urged to be more hygienic. Members of the public who are showing symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and nausea must seek immediate treatment,” she told SelangorKini.

Dr Siti Mariah also reminded the public to practice good self-hygiene and avoid eating raw or uncooked foods.

“Only drink treated or boiled water. If there are symptoms of cholera, seek treatment immediately,” she said.

Yesterday, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin confirmed the cholera case on Twitter.

As a proactive measure, JKNS has requested all medical practitioners to report any confirmed cases to the district health offices (PKD) through the e-notification system within 24 hours.

They are also required to take stool cultures and conduct sensitivity tests for suspected cases.

The PKDs are also urged to be more vigilant in monitoring cases of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) at all clinics.
